On August 2, 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a joint proposed rule to replace the fuel economy and tailpipe emission standards set by the Obama Administration for automobiles.
While the proposed rule solicits comment on multiple alternatives, their preferred alternative would freeze average fuel economy standards for model years 2021-2026 at 2020 levels. The proposal would also revoke the State of California’s waiver to set its own automobile greenhouse gas emission standards under the Clean Air Act. California’s standards have been adopted by 12 other states and the District of Columbia.
