Fusion 360: Entrepreneurs’ Single Destination for Product Design & Manufacturing

Categories: Generative design Sustainability in PD&M

Advances in digital design and fabrication technology and crowd funding are empowering more people to design and manufacture than ever before, and to do it quickly.

To fuel this new wave of innovation, today Autodesk is introducing new CAM capabilities into Autodesk Fusion 360. With the addition of CAM, users are another significant step closer to having a single, integrated tool with everything they needed to bring a product to market — from concept to manufacture. Ideal for hardware starts-ups, small- and medium-sized businesses and students, Fusion 360 is a single cloud platform for form, function and fabrication.

“Product development doesn’t have to be a painfully fragmented process, said Dan Silmore, Director of MFG 360 Marketing at Autodesk. “It’s time to put product design-to-manufacturing within reach for every entrepreneur, and adding CAM in the cloud was the logical next step.”

“Fusion 360 is a single place where everyone involved in our product development process can work together seamlessly in a single, easy-to-use environment. Plus, we love that it works on a Mac! There is nothing else on the market that comes close,” said Scott Menor, CEO of Roambotics, Inc.

Fusion 360 allows users to:

  • Design, test, and fabricate all in one – Users can explore product ideas faster.  Move back and forth through the design, engineering and testing process until users are ready to make their first prototype or move to final production.
  • Access information anytime, anywhere – We live in a mobile age where people work on multiple devices and expect to have access to their data/projects from these devices anytime, anywhere. Users can tap into their projects from mobile devices or dive-in and edit their designs from their Mac, PC or both.
  • Collaborate on one platform – Design is a team effort, and designers need a single place and a single tool to collaborate on projects — one that they can connect to anytime they want. Fusion 360 is made even better with built-in data management for design data and project history. Designers no longer need to worry about losing or recreating their data as they
move through the design to manufacturing process.

The new CAM functionality will consist of 2.5 and 3-axis CAM on Windows 8. Additional enhancements include:

  • Rendering: Improved render experience with new workspace, ray trace command and better performance.
  • Better Output Options: Users are now able to export their Fusion 360 designs in OBJ and DFX file formats, and prep them for 3D printing with the power of Autodesk Meshmixer.
