Our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">involvement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, along with other <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">corporate sponsors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, is the en<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ablement of the<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">discussion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 and we hope the candidates will share their views on the long-term <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">needs of our infrastructure and how they propose to address them \u2013 in a bipartisan manner.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Crossing the aisle<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Traditionally, i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nfrastructure <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is one of the issues <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for which elected officials see eye-to-eye <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">across the proverbial aisle.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Captured by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/01\/12\/509433116\/chao-coasting-to-confirmation-as-trumps-transportation-secretary\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NPR<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uring her confirmation hearing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2017<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, President Trump\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">then-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nomi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nee for<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Transportation <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Secretary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Elaine Chao<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">demonstrated her understanding of the challenges ahead<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the critical nature of reliable, safe, and modern infrastructure, and the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need to keep pace with emerging technology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Chao <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recognized <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our nation <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;is jeopardized by infrastructure in need of repair, the specter of rising highway fatalities, growing congestion and by a failure to keep pace with emerging technologies.&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Secretary Chao was confirmed by the Senate by an almost unanimous vote<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Former-U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a Republican who served as the first Transportation Secretary in President Obama\u2019s Cabinet, has spent decade<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> trumpeting bipartisanship <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on this issue <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">everywhere he goes, including a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/the-hometown-tour-washington-dc-fbca80a0-ca72-44ea-a56a-6a6929f28259.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Axios<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> discussion about infrastructure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> during which he stated,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are no Republican roads. There are no Republican bridges. There are no Democratic roads or Democratic bridges. Infrastructure has always been bipartisan.\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Secretary LaHood is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">right,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> message must be heard.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, a Democrat who succeeded Secretary LaHood, called <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a reliable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and safe transportation \u201ca ladder to opportunity.\u201d<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Foxx is right, but r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ight now, we seem to be missing a few rungs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">To be sure, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">economy relies on our infrastructure to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bring goods to stores<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">deliver packages to our homes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/blog\/2014\/09\/04\/nurse-lan-time-every-time-thanks-transit\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">get people to work<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Back in 2014,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Secretary Foxx<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">brought th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is point to life when he spent a day with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> New Jersey-resident<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Jay Valentin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/blog\/2014\/07\/28\/delivering-goods-labor-love-ups-driver-jay-valentin\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a driver for UPS<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Valentin <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">said this, \u201cThe traffic is stressful. In the morning, we sometimes leave the hub later because the trucks haven&#8217;t been loaded yet. Then, after you finally leave, you hit the traffic.
