Drawing on her own professional background, Jessica\u2019s teaching philosophy is to broaden students\u2019 perspectives of the industry by showing them the many roles and processes behind bringing a product to market.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW118446131 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW118446131 BCX0\">I\u2019ve worked closely with UT Austin for years and first met Jessica when she was looking for solutions to help her class print 3D models of their jewelry. I knew that Fusion 360 offers capabilities that would benefit these young, budding jewelry designers. It was a natural connection.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW96622471 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96622471 BCX0\">I recently caught up with Jessica to discuss her unique approach to this course. She shared, \u201cThis class isn\u2019t just design; it\u2019s a product development class and draws on students\u2019 ability to work across job functions and expertise. They <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW96622471 BCX0\">have to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW96622471 BCX0\"> be able to conduct research, manage the project, sketch their designs, use CAD in Fusion, and employ storytelling to convey their vision.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW239393645 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW239393645 BCX0\">Introducing a new tool to the design process<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW239393645 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW222853684 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW222853684 BCX0\">For Jessica, it was essential that her students be able to use manufacturing design technology to build a physical model of their jewelry. Many of her students come from other departments, drawn in by the uniquely creative outlet of jewelry design. It\u2019s typical to have a geology student, dance student, business student, and design student all working together in one group.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW199337040 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW199337040 BCX0\">Additionally, most of these students had never worked with CAD software before and were now being asked to learn a completely new tool <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW199337040 BCX0\">in order to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW199337040 BCX0\"> complete their final project.<\/span><\/span> <div id=\"attachment_7902\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7902\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7902\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/fusion-gif.gif\" alt=\"Screenshot of jewelry design\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students use Fusion 360 to render 3D models of their jewelry designs.<\/p><\/div> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW177507330 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW177507330 BCX0\">While working with the students, I was surprised how quickly they picked up the terminology and workflows. Once they got a feel for the software and started working, I stood back and offered my support with any issues. Often, their innovative designs tested my many years of experience, and I began to learn alongside them.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW35070554 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW35070554 BCX0\">After just a 90-minute workshop covering the basics, I was blown away by how far they had come. Not only had they embraced the power of the platform to design beautiful creations, but they had 3D printed full scale mock-ups.<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW265287319 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW265287319 BCX0\">From student to professional jewelry designer<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\">At the end of the semester, students present their products to the class and post their designs online. Their fellow students and the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\">general public<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\"> then virtually vote for their favorite, with the winner receiving a special prize: their design produced and sold by Kendra Scott. This semester, Jessica\u2019s students are currently hard at work <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\">finalizing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\"> their product designs, with <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW62110883 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/jciarla6.wixsite.com\/kstxa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW62110883 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">public voting<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\"> beginning on December 7<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW62110883 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"11\">th<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62110883 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\">The latest student-designed product to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\">land in stores<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\"> was the course\u2019s first foray into men\u2019s jewelry design. The <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW63717880 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hsg99AUFf_s?t=274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW63717880 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">bracelet<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63717880 BCX0\">, inspired by the design of the South Congress Bridge in Austin, hit store Their innovative design proved to be a winning idea, and their product was selected to be sold in stores the following year. To help students secure roles in their desired careers, she feels they should be equipped with a broad array of knowledge and skillsets that are sought after by employers.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW80296785 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80296785 BCX0\">These skills proved to be more than helpful for Maddy\u2019s own career. Soon after graduating, Maddy secured a role on Kendra Scott\u2019s product development team, where she is heavily involved in the job functions that she had previously studied in Jessica\u2019s class.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW185563206 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW185563206 BCX0\">She told me, \u201cIt really is a full-circle moment.
