Despite the shutdowns, remote workflows, and production hurdles encountered during the pandemic, this year\u2019s Academy Award-nominated films in the VFX and animation categories show excellence in craft and artistry across the board.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">For more than 25 years, Autodesk Media and Entertainment tools have been integral to helping creative visionaries bring cinematic storytelling to the big screen. This year\u2019s VFX feats ranged from recreating ancient China\u2019s vast Imperial City in \u201cMulan,\u201d to time-twisting CG augmentation of practical effects in \u201cTenet,\u201d to a harrowing space walk in \u201cThe Midnight Sky,\u201d and more.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Weta<\/span><\/i><\/b><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> VFX Transports Audiences to Imperial China<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the live-action epic adventure \u201cMulan,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetafx.co.nz\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Weta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> VFX<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was integral in the development of China\u2019s Imperial City and creating fantastical creatures and effects, earning the team an Oscar nomination. Autodesk Maya and Shotgun both played a role in creating the beautiful, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">historically-authentic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> world the film was set in. \u201cMaya is the foundation for many of our bespoke plugins and serves as a hub for our 3D work,\u201d shared <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Weta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> VFX Supervisor, Anders <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langlands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <div id=\"attachment_6862\" style=\"width: 924px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6862\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6862\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mulan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"914\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mulan.jpg 914w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mulan-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Mulan-700x332.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 914px) 100vw, 914px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Final Shot of Mulan and Honghui on the bridge. \u00a9 Disney 2020 All Rights Reserved<\/p><\/div> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the biggest challenges for the team at <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Weta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was designing the massive Imperial City with a finessed level of detail and historical accuracy. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Langlands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> said, \u201cFor creating the Imperial City, we sent our onset team out to a backlot location in China, where we scanned almost the entire 25-hectare park. This gave us the source material to build a construction kit in Maya, from which we could create an almost infinite variety of authentic-looking buildings. We then fed the buildings into a procedural layout system in Houdini. We came up with a series of rules for building the city from reading academic texts about medieval Chinese city planning and architecture, and by looking at historical maps. We encoded these rules in the procedural layout system and could quickly generate the entire city, being true to that historical research. Then we went in and did a second layout dressing pass in Maya to add detail and slice-of-life vignettes in front of the camera, where it would be most visible.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cheers to This Year\u2019s Nominees<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The nominees for the 93<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Academy Awards in the Best Visual Effects category include \u201cLove and Monsters,\u201d \u201cThe Midnight Sky,\u201d \u201cMulan,\u201d \u201cThe One and Only Ivan,\u201d and \u201cTenet.\u201d Nominees for Best Animation Feature include \u201cOnward,\u201d \u201cOver the Moon,\u201d \u201cA Shaun the Sheep Movie: <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Farmageddon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d \u201cSoul,\u201d and \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">WolfWalkers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d Tune in to the Oscars <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on April 25 to acknowledge these fantastic creative teams.
