The cloud<\/span> is<\/span> ushering in a new era for industry<\/span> by<\/span> creating opportunities <\/span>for <\/span>companies to connect people, processes, and applications around the globe. <\/span>Forge<\/span><\/a> is the cloud platform<\/span> Autodesk <\/span>created<\/span> to connect the processes and lifecycles for designing and <\/span>making.<\/span> As an open platform, Forge puts the capabilities of Autodesk products in the hands of developers <\/span>in the form<\/span> of web-based APIs<\/span> and services<\/span>. Customers from the worlds of architecture, engineering, construction<\/span>, and<\/span> manufacturing<\/span>, <\/span>are putting these services to work to <\/span>create customized solutions and <\/span>connect and extend business processes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u201c<\/span>T<\/span>he most common uses <\/span>of Forge <\/span>focus on three kinds of tasks: automation, visualization, and collaboration<\/span>,\u201d says Ron Locklin, <\/span>D<\/span>irector of <\/span>Strategy <\/span>and <\/span>Marketing <\/span>for Forge.<\/span> \u201cIn the case of automation, for many tedious tasks<\/span> you <\/span>do i<\/span>n AutoCAD<\/span>, Revit<\/span>,<\/span> Inventor, or 3ds Max,<\/span> you can use Forge to automate<\/span>. <\/span>Just write the script and let the computer do the work<\/span>.\u201d <\/span>That might <\/span>mean<\/span> automating the calculations for <\/span>a<\/span> new architectural project<\/span>, <\/span>converting<\/span> photos to 3D models<\/span>, <\/span>documenting a Revit or Inventor design, <\/span>or<\/span> generating<\/span> product images for an online catalog<\/span>, among other tasks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

With the Forge Viewer handling display and the Model Derivative API extracting metadata from design models, the Scaled Robotics<\/a> team estimates that they save as much as two months annually of time formerly spent maintaining a data parser.<\/p><\/div> Visualization can refer to <\/span>both<\/span> data <\/span>and<\/span> design<\/span>s<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Data visualization and analysis\u2014commonly called dashboarding \u2014 adds valuable context to raw data by overlaying it on an interactive 3D rendering of the design that data relates to. This makes the data far easier to interpret than a set of numbers, and allows us to make connections and create insights and that otherwise wouldn\u2019t be possible. V<\/span>isualization <\/span>also refer<\/span>s<\/span> to bringing design ideas to life through <\/span>immersive technologies like <\/span>virtual <\/span>reality or<\/span> informing reality with data through augmented reality. \u201cOne thing Autodesk products have always led the industry with is great visualization capabilities,\u201d Locklin says.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Finally, there\u2019s collaboration. With Forge, you can give people on <\/span>a <\/span>pro<\/span>ject <\/span>shared <\/span>access <\/span>to<\/span> d<\/span>ata and <\/span>designs in tailored ways<\/span>. \u201cDisparate teams can work on the same project, even if they\u2019re in different cities or countries,\u201d says Locklin. \u201cThey can see the models as they are changed in real time and play their role without the delays that used to be common before the cloud.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

Forge in action<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since the launch of <\/span>Forge<\/span><\/a> in 201<\/span>5,<\/span> companies in a range of industries have been putting the platform to work to increase efficiency and improve outcomes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Skystone<\/span><\/a> is building the world\u2019s <\/span>tallest <\/span>modular hotel<\/span><\/a> in New York and using Forge<\/span> to get it done. <\/span>They <\/span>are <\/span>design<\/span>ing <\/span>r<\/span>oom modules in Revit, manufactur<\/span>ing<\/span> the modules<\/span> in a factory in Poland<\/span>, and<\/span> then<\/span> deliver<\/span>ing<\/span> the fully <\/span>outfitted<\/span> rooms<\/span>\u2014complete with <\/span>beds, lamps, carpets<\/span>, and more\u2014<\/span>to New York via cargo ship. They use <\/span>a service called <\/span>KitConnect<\/span><\/a> built <\/span>on <\/span>Forge<\/span> by<\/span> Project Frog<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> to create<\/span> and store<\/span> a library of <\/span>components<\/span> and <\/span>rule<\/span>–<\/span>sets<\/span> that can be <\/span>configur<\/span>ed in Revit. Th<\/span>is <\/span>has <\/span>saved them <\/span>hundreds of<\/span> hours of manual <\/span>work<\/span>. <\/span>Project Frog is an Autodesk Forge Fund investee.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>Not-for-profit <\/span>Build Change<\/span><\/a> uses <\/span>Forge <\/span>to create safer, more resilient housing in developing countries. The first step in their process is to assess and analyze the existing structures, something they used to do <\/span>manually. \u201cWe used<\/span> AutoCAD <\/span>to churn out unique floor plans for every homeowner. We walked around in villages with handheld Garmin GPS units to keep track of locations<\/span>, a<\/span>nd <\/span>we compared satellite images before and after disasters to determine who lost homes<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> according to <\/span>Elizabeth <\/span>Hausler<\/span>, Ph.D., Build Change Founder and CEO<\/span>.<\/span> Now they\u2019re using Forge to automate the process, analyzing photos sent by the homeowners with AI <\/span>to<\/span> determine<\/span> whether a house can be retrofitted. <\/span>\u201cWhat once took <\/span>a<\/span> team of three people four or five days now takes one person three hours,\u201d Hausler sa<\/span>ys<\/span>. \u201cThat\u2019s 97% less time.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Companies in the manufacturing space are <\/span>also putting Forge to work<\/span>. <\/span>CADshare<\/span> turned to<\/span> Forge<\/span><\/a> to simplify the process for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to publish 3D manuals for spare parts. <\/span>Building on both<\/span> the Forge Viewer and the Model Derivative API<\/span>s<\/span>, the<\/span>y<\/span> built a platform that enables OEMs to <\/span>generate manuals from their own design files in about a day, down from the 10 days it used to take. And these manuals create better experiences for their customers, with<\/span> metadata <\/span>baked into the<\/span> 3D models. \u201cForge not only helped us speed our product to market, it also removed risks associated with custom development in our business,\u201d says Chris Acheson, Founder and CEO of <\/span>CADshare<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> \u201cWith the time we save, we focus on building new features. Doing more with design data<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The laws of physics will always constrain our designs<\/span>\u2014<\/span>there\u2019s no sense in designing something you can\u2019t build<\/span>\u2014b<\/span>ut technology doesn\u2019t have to.
