According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/cp\/facts.html\">CDC<\/a>, cerebral palsy is the most common of all childhood disabilities; globally, it touches approximately 1.5-4 newborns out of every 1,000. It canaffect a child\u2019s mobility at varying degrees and other vital motor skills, such as speaking, vision and hearing<strong>. <\/strong>Praneit\u2019s condition was so severe that he would not be able to walk and would most likely spend the rest of his life sitting in a wheelchair. Maggu knew that he needed to help his nephew. \u201cThey say that sitting for eight hours a day is bad for you\u2026 imagine how bad it is for someone spending their entire life sitting, and we just wanted to fix that,\u201d Maggu said. <\/p>\n<h3>No Solutions in Sight<\/h3>\n<p> Experts agree that kids who live with motors disorders like Praneit\u2019s need to have better access to mobility options that help them stay active. \u201cChildren need to be up and moving. It\u2019s so important for their brain development,\u201d says Jo-Anne Weltman, a physiotherapist who specializes in the treatment of children with significant motor disorders. \u201cIf [kids with cerebral palsy] sit all day, they can experience uncomfortable joint and muscle contractions, as well as circulatory and digestive issues.\u201d Wanting to create a better future for Praneit, Maggu began researching devices that would not only allow his nephew to experience a bit of movement but also exercise his body and perform gait training. When he discovered that there were no commercial devices on the market for children, he contacted his friend Rahul Udasi, a fellow mechatronics engineering student at Waterloo. Together they began exploring different ways to help Praneit. <div id=\"attachment_5104\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5104\" class=\"wp-image-5104 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Trexo-Robotics-765x425.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Trexo-Robotics-765x425.jpg 765w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Trexo-Robotics-765x425-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Trexo-Robotics-765x425-700x389.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Early days at Trexo HQ.<\/p><\/div> <\/p>\n<h3>The Mechanics of Mobility<\/h3>\n<p> They had previously heard of \u2018exoskeletons\u2019 that helped people with mobility issues, but could only find devices that were meant for adults, in addition to being costly and hard to get a hold of. \u201cRahul and I had a shared vision of what the future is going to look like, and the role that robotics is going to play in the future. When there was nothing out there, we decided to build the future that we envisioned instead of waiting for it to happen,\u201d Maggu said. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To be honest, the device didn\u2019t work at first.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Fast forward to 2016. Maggu was pursuing his MBA at the University of Toronto and Udasi had just completed his Master of Engineering, focused on Robotics and Automation at the same school. That summer, they developed a proof of concept prototype for Maggu\u2019s nephew. It was a walker with robotic legs and a battery pack that a child could be fitted into. A parent or physical therapist would then control the child\u2019s motion through an app that would move the robotic legs, while still allowing the child to engage their own muscles as they experienced movement. With the working prototype finished, they were ready to start testing. <\/p>\n<h3>Finding Their Stride<\/h3>\n<p> With the prototype built, Maggu packed up the robotic legs and flew to India where his nephew lived so he could try the device. It wasn\u2019t as simple as he had originally thought. \u201cTo be honest, the device didn\u2019t work at first\u201d says Maggu. After a few rounds of hardware modifications at his brother\u2019s workshop in Delhi, Maggu was finally able to watch his nephew successfully take his first steps with the device. It was a triumphant moment. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt&#8217;s going to make a big change, in so many children&#8217;s lives.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> After returning to Canada the team realized they had created something viable. \u201cWe started getting interest from families, from clinics, from hospitals, and that&#8217;s when we realized that we were on to something. That&#8217;s how <a href=\"https:\/\/trexorobotics.com\/\">Trexo Robotics<\/a> was started,\u201d said Maggu, who is the CEO, while Udasi is the CTO. \u201cI think the first time I saw it was on the internet,\u201d says physiotherapist Weltman. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Finally there is something that will help so many more children.\u2019 I&#8217;ve been following them from the start and am very excited to test it out with my patients. Because I think it&#8217;s going to make a big change, in so many children&#8217;s lives. The founders started recruiting a team to help them build an easy-to-use, effective and cost-efficient robotic walker for children with lower body disabilities. The goal? They needed access to resources such as machinery and materials, plus a scalable solution to 3D-print various parts for the robot walker. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It means that you don&#8217;t have to put something out into the world and then wait two months for it to come back before you can know if it works or not.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> In early 2018, Trexo joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/autode.sk\/2MlwZA7\">Residency Program<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/autode.sk\/2Ikly6y\">Autodesk Technology Centre in Toronto<\/a>, which allowed the team to bring in their prototype and rapidly begin producing 3D-printed pieces to assemble and test even more robotic walkers. <div id=\"attachment_5080\" style=\"width: 1089px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5080\" class=\"wp-image-5080 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Alelise_Jorgensen_Toronto-Trexo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1079\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Alelise_Jorgensen_Toronto-Trexo.png 1079w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Alelise_Jorgensen_Toronto-Trexo-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Alelise_Jorgensen_Toronto-Trexo-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Alelise_Jorgensen_Toronto-Trexo-700x467.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1079px) 100vw, 1079px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anelise Jorgenson says the team used rapid prototyping with 3D printing to speed up their product development cycles.<\/p><\/div> \u201cRapid prototyping is really changing the game for mechanical engineering,\u201d said Anelise Jorgenson, a mechanical designer at Trexo. \u201cIt just means that you don&#8217;t have this wait time, you don&#8217;t have to put something out into the world and then wait two months for it to come back before you can know if it works or not, which means you can take more risks, and when you can take more risks, then you open up this whole different field of possibilities.\u201d The team was also seeking mentorship from different industries. Being part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/autode.sk\/2MlwZA7\">Autodesk residency program<\/a> gave them access \u00a0to valuable resources such as expert-led Fusion 360 workshops, Autodesk-run industry networking events, and equipment. \u201cGiving their team the hands-on time with the technology and access to the 24\/7 facilities let them refine their workflows and ultimately take control of the manufacturing of their product,\u201d said Chris Chekan, Shop Supervisor at the Autodesk Technology Centre in Toronto. <\/p>\n<h3>Gaining Traction<\/h3>\n<p> With the support of the Technology Centre staff and resources, and after many iterations, the team produced a second-generation walker. Their next challenge was to refine some of the elements of the initial prototype built for Praneit, keeping in mind that the child\u2019s comfort is tantamount. According to Maggu, \u201cComfort was one of the biggest design hurdles that we saw early on. You can build the most advanced robotic system with the most amazing control algorithms, but if it\u2019s uncomfortable, no child will wear it for more than five minutes.\u201d Maggu and his team iterated with more than 78 different materials before finding the perfect combination. The team settled on using a chopped carbon-fiber mix as the material for the 3D-printed parts. <\/p>\n<div class=\"pull-quote\"> <span lang=\"EN-CA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/autode.sk\/2XnAAyI\">See Trexo\u2019s robotic walker in action<\/a>.<\/span> <\/div>\n<p> Matthew Spremulli, an Industry Engagement Manager at Autodesk in Toronto, says Trexo was able to dramatically accelerate their product development by using the Markforged Onyx, a 3D printer, to produce the final parts for their walkers. \u201cAt the beginning they weren\u2019t sure if this material (chopped carbon-fiber mix) and printing process would be useful beyond making mock-ups. But by the end they became a great case study of a startup using the printer (and material) for production parts,\u201d Spremulli said. He views Trexo\u2019s experience in the <a href=\"https:\/\/autode.sk\/2MlwZA7\">Residency Program<\/a> as a success, adding, \u201cThey were able to leverage the program for larger initiatives \u2013 such as their acceptance into the <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/02\/25\/helping-children-overcome-their-mobility-challenges-trexo-robotics-gets-a-y-combinator-boost\/\">Y-Combinator Program<\/a>.\u201d <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5085\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boy-looking-at-Trexo-Plus-system.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1620\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boy-looking-at-Trexo-Plus-system.jpg 1620w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boy-looking-at-Trexo-Plus-system-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boy-looking-at-Trexo-Plus-system-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Boy-looking-at-Trexo-Plus-system-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1620px) 100vw, 1620px\" \/> The team has come a long way, but they\u2019re excited about the road ahead. The Trexo Robotics walker is undergoing clinical studies and has already been deployed at the Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Division of Rehabilitation Medicine, with four more clinical studies at notable hospitals across North America in the pipeline.
