Even before the pandemic, businesses across the globe were embracing automation as a solution to the skills shortages facing so many industries. The arrival of COVID-19 accelerated digital transformation, and in many cases the adoption of automation, for organizations who suddenly had to deal with remote workforces and worker proximity issues as an added challenge. The debate about automation has raged for years\u2014does it displace those workers whose jobs can be easily replaced by an automated solution? Or does it create\u00a0opportunity\u00a0for those workers to up-level their skills, work alongside automation, and subsequently do more interesting work?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \"Man <\/p>\n

Autodesk Launches Global Research Program Exploring\u00a0Future of Work<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

To further explore the issue, Autodesk will be releasing\u00a0a number of\u00a0research studies this summer. They will explore the state of automation, skills development, and the future of work across multiple industries and geographies. The first report, \u201cThe Future of Work is Now: Is APAC Ready?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is available\u00a0today. <\/span> <\/p>\n

Autodesk\u2019s view has long been that automation creates opportunity, but only if we are deliberate about giving workers the skills they need to thrive in a new era of automation. That means new <\/span>credentialing and certification programs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to give them the skills they need to succeed, partnerships across the public and private sector to make workforce development a priority, and much more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

State of Preparedness in APAC<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

APAC is home to 60% of the global workforce and the world\u2019s largest developing economies.\u00a0The Autodesk Foundation and Deloitte embarked on this joint project to help identify the labor markets most vulnerable to technological disruption in APAC and,\u00a0in doing so, propose solutions to help workforces thrive as automation becomes a reality.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> It\u2019s undeniable that automation will cause disruption\u2014but the state of preparedness of countries and industries will determine whether they benefit from these advances.\u00a0Digitization and automation will affect\u00a0all workers to some extent. But which\u00a0industries and\u00a0countries are most prepared?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> The report highlights that not every industry is equally well placed to capitalize. Those at the highest risk of automation are frequently the ones least likely to be able to seize the benefits. Deloitte identified\u00a0<\/span>construction\u00a0<\/span><\/b>as the industry likely to be hardest hit by automation, largely due to the high proportion of routine, manual tasks.\u00a0<\/span>Mining, manufacturing and transport\u00a0<\/span><\/b>were highlighted as industries in APAC facing similar challenges.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \"Deloitte <\/p>\n

In regional terms, the state of preparedness\u00a0for these technology-driven changes\u00a0is measured by\u00a0the\u00a0proactive\u00a0steps\u00a0regions are taking to embrace automation and minimize disruption,\u00a0such as improving digital literacy, supporting disadvantaged workers,\u00a0and putting in place the right infrastructure and skills that will help countries create new\u00a0roles\u00a0that workers can\u00a0transition\u00a0into. In APAC, the state of preparedness closely aligns with economic development\u2014meaning the countries facing the biggest potential impact, are also the least prepared. With that in mind, countries like\u00a0<\/span>India, Bangladesh,\u00a0and Pakistan<\/span><\/b>\u00a0are most at-risk and least prepared for automation while\u00a0<\/span>Singapore, Australia, Japan,\u00a0and Korea<\/span><\/b>\u00a0are best positioned to capitalize on the opportunity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> All countries\u00a0can do more to assist workers facing automation risk. There is no such thing as being too prepared\u00a0and there are small steps countries can take when starting to prepare their workforce for the upcoming changes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \"Man<\/span><\/b> <\/p>\n

Getting Proactive to Address the Risks of Automation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The report also highlights a series of proactive steps that should be taken to harness the benefits and address the risks, including:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Increasing\u00a0awareness of the need to adapt<\/span><\/b>, changing the narrative in these regions to focus on the\u00a0opportunities\u00a0created in terms of higher, value-add activities rather than the risk of job losses created by automation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Fund industry-specific programs\u00a0<\/span><\/b>for\u00a0digital\u00a0transformation\u00a0helping smaller businesses to\u00a0access new,\u00a0digital technologies\u00a0to help\u00a0accelerate\u00a0automation usage and adoption<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Invest in learning programs\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to help disadvantaged workers and build resilience,\u00a0promoting the uptake of reskilling or upskilling courses to help workers continually reinvent themselves in an ever-evolving environment of disruption<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The report explored the future of work and automation in 12 APAC countries including Thailand, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, The Philippines, Indonesia, and Australia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> APAC is a diverse region and the challenges facing individual countries when it comes to automation are vastly different. However, the report points to one common conclusion, regardless of geography\u2014that automation will create opportunity if the right support mechanisms are put in place and the focus is put squarely on helping workers to succeed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n
