Throw a pandemic in the mix, where students had to adapt overnight to new ways of learning and collaborating, and it is nothing short of inspiring to see the level of creativity, ingenuity, and craft by the young and emerging artists honored this year. <\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">From fully animated shorts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to live-action productions with computer generated creatures, environments, and effects, this year\u2019s nominated projects included \u201cTime\u2019s Down\u201d (ARTFX, France), \u201cARAL\u201d (ARTFX, France), \u201cStrands of Mind\u201d (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Filmakademie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, Germany) and \u201cMigrants\u201d (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P\u00f4le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 3D, France). Each project showcases the budding talent of visionary artists, who delivered beautiful end results while overcoming the hurdles of remote workflows and shutdowns.\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n<h3><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><strong>&#8220;Migrants&#8221; Wins 2021 VES Student Award<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p> <div id=\"attachment_6814\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6814\" class=\"wp-image-6814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ves-student-award-winners-migrants.png\" alt=\"shot from VES student award winning film migrants\" width=\"960\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ves-student-award-winners-migrants.png 960w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ves-student-award-winners-migrants-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ves-student-award-winners-migrants-700x298.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of the Migrants team.<\/p><\/div> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Autodesk sponsored the VES Student Award for the 13th consecutive year, presenting this year\u2019s award to student filmmaking team Aubin Kubiak, Antoine <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dupriez<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Hugo <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Caby<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Lucas <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lermytte<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zo\u00e9<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Devise for their <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/457795794\">moving animated short \u201cMigrants<\/a>.\u201d The film follows the plight of a polar bear and its cub, while exploring current environmental and socio-political issues, including climate change, racism, and the refugee crisis. To better resonate with younger audiences, the short features charming stuffed animal characters and stop motion stylized assets.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur first step was to create a strong reference base for the different assets of the movie. We did most of the shape retake in 3D and we used our references to create our textures. We built our assets, environments, and lighting with the idea of a stop motion scene. So, our biggest focus was scale, from the modelling to compositing, and the management of the focal blur,\u201d the team shared.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe biggest challenge was finding the global look of the movie,\u201d the team added. \u201cBecause we wanted to match the stop motion aspect, we had to find solutions in every stage of production. We had to make our characters move like puppets, make our environment and characters look like they were handmade, and work hard to perfect our visual effects.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout production, the filmmakers were tasked with working remotely from home, while still collaborating effectively. Strong IT support from their school, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P\u00f4le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 3D, helped the students adapt to remote workflows and keep motivation and productivity up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWith the challenges the pandemic and remote working brought along, we had to learn to be autonomous with our work while still cooperating closely,\u201d the team said. \u201cIt took some time to adapt, but we were almost as effective as if we were at school.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bravo for a job well done.
