\"\" In April 2019, <\/span>design history was made as<\/span> the <\/span>first chair created in partnership between humans and artificial intelligence<\/span><\/a> was unveiled during Milan Design Week.<\/span> The \u201cA.I. Chair\u201d <\/span>is the result of<\/span> a<\/span> collaboration between<\/span> Philippe <\/span>Starck<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Kartell<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Autodesk<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> A.I. Chair was developed with <\/span>generative design<\/span><\/a>, a form of artificial intelligence that leverages the power of the cloud to create better outcomes for products, buildings, infrastructure, systems and experiences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> As of today, <\/span>A.I.<\/span> is<\/span> now<\/span> available<\/span>.<\/span> \"\" At <\/span>IMM<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Maison & <\/span>Objet<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> two international<\/span> interior design<\/span> fair<\/span>s taking place <\/span>this week <\/span>in Cologne and Paris<\/span>, Kartell is<\/span> officially<\/span> launching <\/span>the <\/span>A.I.<\/span> Chair<\/span>.<\/span> To<\/span> add to the excitement<\/span>, <\/span>the chairs are<\/span> being manufactured using<\/span> 100<\/span> percent<\/span> recycled material<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> The<\/span> Kartell<\/span> team<\/span> is using <\/span>a <\/span>pure and uncontaminated<\/span> recycled materia<\/span>l<\/span> that fully respects<\/span> the aesthetic quality and structural requirements<\/span>.<\/span> This<\/span> is the first time that the<\/span> world<\/span>–<\/span>renowned<\/span> furniture<\/span> company is using <\/span>material<\/span>s<\/span> derived solely <\/span>from the scraps of <\/span>their <\/span>industrial production<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u201cThis chair is a perfect example of the design and manufacturing industry moving toward sustainability and circularity,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Arthur <\/span>Harsuvanakit<\/span>, <\/span>Senior Designer<\/span> at Autodesk.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> K<\/span>artell has been <\/span>focused on<\/span> sustainability for more than <\/span>a decade<\/span>. <\/span>In 2019<\/span>, for their<\/span> 70th anniversary, <\/span>they<\/span> introduced <\/span>a<\/span> m<\/span>anifesto<\/span>, <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Kartell Loves the Planet<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> which <\/span>emphasize<\/span>s<\/span> the company\u2019s <\/span>commitment to sustainability and environmental friendliness.<\/span> With A.I., Kartell <\/span>is taking <\/span>another step forward in its ongoing commitment towards <\/span>safeguarding the environment<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Unconsciously, we\u2019re trying to produce objects with less material. Ultimately, design is about the theory and strategy to reduce the amount of material used. That\u2019s why it was so important to use the minimum material possible for this chair. We should be trying to use less material with the objects we create<\/span>,\u201d<\/span> says <\/span>Starck<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

Upcycling <\/span><\/b>Material and Circular<\/span><\/b> Design<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

With<\/span> an <\/span>expe<\/span>cted<\/span><\/a> 10 billion<\/span> people<\/span> liv<\/span>ing<\/span> on the planet in a matter of decades, we need to radically rethink how we use materials and energy in a <\/span>responsible <\/span>and <\/span>circular way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

For decades, p<\/span>roducts have been designed as if resources <\/span>were<\/span> unlimited.<\/span> The need to reduce<\/span> our negative impact on the planet and on people is a reality <\/span>that\u2019s here<\/span>.<\/span> In implementing circularity<\/span>, <\/span>materials<\/span> are used in a<\/span> closed-loop <\/span>system with the goal of reducing waste by <\/span>reus<\/span>ing<\/span>, refurbishing, remanufacturing, recycling, and upcycling. <\/span>And circularity starts with design.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u201cC<\/span>ircularity is <\/span>not about<\/span> simply recycling<\/span>. It\u2019s about <\/span>truly embracing this idea of upcycling and making sure that the materials that we put in our products can be upcycled and used in a new product<\/span>,\u201d<\/span> said <\/span>Lynelle Cameron, CEO of Autodesk Foundation and Vice President of Sustainability for Autodesk<\/span>, in a <\/span>recent video<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Claudio <\/span>Luti<\/span>, Chairman of Kartell<\/span>,<\/span> said,<\/span> \u201cIt\u2019s not a question of simply creating a product that seems green, but of generating an industrial strategy that involves the entire manufacturing process, from the business plan and marketing to communication actions and the sales network<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \"\" <\/p>\n

How <\/span><\/b>I<\/span><\/b>njection Molding<\/span><\/b> Played a <\/span><\/b>Key <\/span><\/b>Role<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

During <\/span>the <\/span>chair <\/span>design process<\/span>, i<\/span>njection<\/span> molding<\/span> was <\/span>specified <\/span>as the best manufacturing process<\/span> for mass production<\/span>. But w<\/span>ith injection molding come <\/span>certain constraints around<\/span> wall thickness<\/span> of the product<\/span> being manufactured<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u201cW<\/span>e had to kind of push the tool toward producing solutions with relatively minimal wall thickness for injection molding. That meant figuring out new strategies and adjusting our algorithms to accommodate for those constraints<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> explained <\/span>Harsuvanakit<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>With generative design, you are able to, in order of magnitude, create more solutions and strive for better solutions faster.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Here\u2019s to more<\/span> opportunities to design and make <\/span>with less material and more sustainability.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
