Here at Autodesk, we\u2019re continually amazed by the many companies who are leading and transforming design and manufacturing processes in a positive way, and we recently honored several companies for their achievements at the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>third\u00a0<\/span><\/span>annual Design & Manufacturing Excellence Awards, held at\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Autodesk University<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in Las Vegas.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

Category: Innovator of the Year<\/h2>\n

Winner: Volkswagen Group of America<\/h3>\n

To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of its largest vehicle research facility outside of Germany, the team at\u00a0Volkswagen<\/a>\u2019s Innovation and Engineering Center reimagined the\u00a0VW bus — an iconic symbol of the company\u2019s heritage and values. With a focus on maximizing strength while minimizing weight, the VW team\u00a0collaborated<\/a>\u00a0with Autodesk\u00a0by\u00a0applying generative design to the wheels to reduce the overall weight and rolling resistance on the tires. <\/p>\n

Meet the designers<\/a> who created the VW Type 20 Bus. <\/div>\n

The new wheels are 18 percent lighter than a standard set, and the overall development time from design to manufacture was cut from\u00a01.5\u00a0years to a matter of months. Generative design was also used to reconceptualize the steering wheel, as well as the support structure for the rear bench seating and the external side mirror mounts. The Type 20 electric-infused showcase vehicle combines classic Volkswagen design with new technologies that are shaping the future of the automotive industry. <\/p>\n

Category: Industry Disruptor<\/h2>\n

Winner: Airbus<\/h2>\n

Innovators at\u00a0Airbus<\/a>\u00a0headquarters in Germany are\u00a0pushing the boundaries<\/a>\u00a0of generative design technology to\u00a0change the way\u00a0things are manufactured and built in the aerospace industry. The team continues to make advances with its Bionic Partition\u00a0project<\/a>. Using new constraints\u00a0made\u00a0available in generative design technology, Airbus optimized a new partition\u00a0that is\u00a0significantly lighter, yet just as strong,\u00a0and can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost using a casting process. <\/p>\n

In addition, the team is applying generative design to\u00a0other structural aircraft components such as\u00a0the vertical tail plane of its A320 aircraft, targeting mass, stiffness, and impact resistance. Finally, Airbus innovators are\u00a0looking into\u00a0generative design\u00a0for the layout of\u00a0a new production\u00a0facility\u00a0that meets the highest standards for sustainability, and ultimately enables its workforce to assemble engines more quickly with more efficient logistical flows.

With a reputation for ground-breaking innovation, Dynamic Attractions is staying true to its motto, \u201cAnything you can dream, we can build.\u201d

Winner:\u00a0LASIMM<\/h3>\n

Paving the way for giant metal parts and structures to be 3d printed for construction,\u00a0the\u00a0Large Additive Subtractive Integrated Modular Machine<\/a>\u00a0(LASIMM<\/a>)\u00a0is a groundbreaking project led by 10 partners from across Europe.\u00a0Its goal\u00a0is\u00a0to build one of\u00a0the\u202fworld\u2019s\u00a0largest hybrid manufacturing machines. The LASIMM machine features unique metal additive and subtractive capabilities, with abilities\u00a0to 3D print metal parts and structures as large as 20 feet by 6 feet, and up to 4500 pounds. The machine\u202fwas recently\u202ftested to manufacture demo parts,\u00a0such as large beam structures, airplane panels,\u202fand wind turbine parts,\u00a0designed by leading industrial end-users\u202fincluding Foster & Partners. Powered by\u00a0Autodesk Fusion 360<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Autodesk\u00a0PowerMill<\/a>, the\u00a0LASIMM\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0brings\u00a0hybrid manufacturing to a truly global and industrial scale.

Winner:\u00a0KickStart\u00a0International<\/h3>\n

Africa is a continent\u00a0with a large population of farmers who are struggling to feed their communities,\u00a0even though\u00a0it holds more than one-quarter of the world\u2019s arable land. This challenge contributes to rampant poverty, malnutrition, and unfortunate yet avoidable health and education outcomes. KickStart International<\/a>\u00a0is a non-profit social enterprise focused on lifting millions of African farmers out of poverty. <\/p>\n

Meet the Autodesk Foundation<\/a> and its grantees. <\/div>\n

By designing low-cost, high-quality irrigation pumps,\u00a0KickStart\u00a0makes irrigation affordable\u00a0by\u00a0significantly increasing crop yields, incomes, and helping farmers establish profitable businesses. Through a\u00a0partnership<\/a>\u00a0with the Autodesk Foundation, Kickstart recently finalized key design elements for its\u00a0MoneyMaker\u00a0Solar Pump. Designed using\u00a0Autodesk\u00a0Fusion 360<\/a>, the pump is currently being tested in Kenya, and is the lowest cost solar pump available in Africa.
