<\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bionic Partition 2.0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Back in 2015<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Airbus unveiled i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ts first generative design proof-of-concept. The \u201cbionic partition\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a next-gen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eration<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> version of the wall and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">jumpseat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> support structure that divides the passenger compartment from the galley of a plane.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> initial design was promising<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 45 percent lighter than the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">traditional <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">part<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> yet just as strong<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Airbus estimated <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the new design approach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> could <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">save<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> nearly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">half a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> million<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> metric<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> tons of CO2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> emissions<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">per year <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if rolled out across its backlog of A320 planes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <div id=\"attachment_5696\" style=\"width: 1180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5696\" class=\"wp-image-5696 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image87.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image87.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image87-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image87-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image87-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Airbus workers test placement of the bionic partition.<\/p><\/div> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Originally the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> intention<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was to fabricate the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> new<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> partition using metal additive manufacturing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. But due to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a range of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> variables in the manufacturing market and materials requirements, it became clear that an alternative fabrication <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would be necessary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fortunately,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Autodesk generative design technology has continued to mature and is now capable of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">optimizing for multiple advanced manufacturing techniques<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> during the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">design phase of product development<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">For Airbus, this <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meant they could use generative design to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">create a plastic, 3D-printed mold for the partition, and then <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the part<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in an alloy that\u2019s already qualified for flight.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bionic partition 2.0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is just as strong and light as its predecessor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can be fabricated at scale <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more affordably<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThe revised design makes the bionic partition much more viable for production. The first prototype is in production<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> which we hope to finish<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">before the end of the year,\u201d said Bastian Schaefer, the designer at Airbus who has been leading the collaboration with Autodesk. \u201cThe process and technology have evolved to where we can now manufacture multiple units at a considerably lower cost.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Airbus is in the process of utilizing generative design to rethink other structural aircraft components, including the leading edge of the vertical tail plane (VTP) of the A320. The purpose of a VTP (or vertical stabilizer) on an airplane is to provide directional stability and reduce aerodynamic inefficiency caused by side-to-side movement.<\/span> <div id=\"attachment_5692\" style=\"width: 1180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5692\" class=\"wp-image-5692 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/P1080386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/P1080386.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/P1080386-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/P1080386-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/P1080386-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 3D print of the generatively designed vertical tail plane<\/p><\/div> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Generative design<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">is enabling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the team t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o evaluate hundreds of design alternatives <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that all<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> objectives for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> VTP<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> stiffness, stability and mass<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Factory<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the Future<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Positive responses <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to what<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> generative design<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> could do for<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">aircraft<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> components<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">led Airbus to explore what the technology <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">might do for other parts of its business.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Earlier this year, the team began thinking about how generative design could be applied to the building design<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> layout<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and workflows<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its factories<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">First, they looked <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n assembly line for A350 wings where <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a significant amount of human labor and several different tools are required<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The objective was to figure out how <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a single factory<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> bay could be configured <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for multiple <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wing variations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">different generations of the A350<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ith optimal <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tool locations and travel paths<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and minimal congestion and bottlenecks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span> &nbsp; Airbus is now turning its attention to possible concepts for using this technology in other production hangars in the future. The goal is to ultimately assemble engines more quickly with more efficient logistical flows and a more content workforce, in a factory that is expandable and adaptable to meet Airbus\u2019 needs both
