A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nd a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s global growth continues, it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s estimated that between today and 2060, the amount of building floorspace<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> will double<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. That\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> equivalent to building an <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">entire New York City every month for <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/architecture2030.org\/buildings_problem_why\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">40 years<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/i> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Moreover, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">least half of the carbon footprint of these new buildings will take the form of embodied carbon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the greenhouse gas emitted in the building material supply chain, including raw material extraction, transport, refining, and manufacturing of building materials.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">So how can we mitigate the proliferation of embodied carbon? <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To date, the industry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> struggled to understand and measure <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in their projects. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> two materials can look identical and perform the same, but have extremely different amounts of embodied carbon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a fully recycled steel beam from a renewably-powered electric arc furnace and a virgin steel beam from a coal-fired furnace may be superficially identical, but <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">radically <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">different in their impacts to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">climate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"pull-quote\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/damassets.autodesk.net\/content\/dam\/org\/assets\/2019\/autodesk-report-low-carbon-innovation.pdf?mktvar002=1092896&amp;utm_medium=product&amp;utm_source=ipm&amp;utm_campaign=americas-multi-adsk-news-ctas&amp;utm_id=1092896\">See how<\/a> the Autodesk Foundation supports low carbon innovation. <\/div>\n<p> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The EC3 tool takes data from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.environdec.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Environmental Product Declarations<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (EPDs) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> align, assess, and present<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the embodied carbon impacts in a way that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s easy to use and act upon. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">solution enables the building industry to easily access and view material carbon emissions data, allowing them to make carbon-smart choices during material specification and procurement. data-contrast=\"auto\">is also using the tool in pilot projects. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Autodesk\u2019s support of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span
